The William Carleton Society is performing via The Carleton Players a reading of extracts from Carleton’s story “The Emigrants of Ahadarra” adapted by Liam Foley. The townland near Augher Co. Tyrone is often spelled Aughadarragh.

SATURDAY 2nd NOVEMBER
Tea or coffee will be served from 10:00am and the seminar on the Literature of Irish Exile (Carleton, Montague and Migration) will begin at 10:30am beginning with Dr Patrick Fitzgerald and Liam Campbell speaking about John Montague. WCS President Jack Johnston will talk on William Carleton before the reading which lasts around half an hour.
The event will end around 12:30pm giving participants an opportunity to visit the Ulster American Folk Park including the cottage of New York Archbishop John Hughes from Augher, a contemporary of Carleton, or to have lunch in the museum’s café.
Admission is free and no booking is required but donations will be gratefully accepted at the door which will be partially used towards maintaining this new website.
Illustrations are taken from Carleton’s story “The Emigrants of Ahadarra“. The illustrator is ‘Martin’ who is M.L.Flanery and this edition was published in New York in 1881 after Carleton’s death in 1869, so the ’80’ after the name Martin means he drew it in 1880.
